Cellar Door Hero: Sonja Kopke-Moore from Deep Woods Estate and Evans & Tate

Meet Sonja Kopke-Moore, she has her hands full managing Deep Woods Estate and Evans & Tate!

Sonja's love of wine started as a student when she joined a wine club in South Africa, receiving a 2-bottle pack of wine every 3 months…fast forward 20 years to buying a property in Yallingup surrounded by vineyards and incredible wine.

We caught up with Sonja and asked her to share a few things with us.

How did you get into the wine industry?

After moving to Yallingup, I dropped my resumé off to about 15 wineries, wondering who would take a chance on a rookie. Eight years later I’m still pinching myself at how privileged I am to be working in an industry I love.

What is your favourite varietal and why?

Chardonnay yes, Cabernet absolutely, but nothing brings me more joy than the anticipation of new vintage Rosé. Winemakers across the region are making beautiful textural, flavour-filled examples of this wine style, elevating its status in the process. Bring on that Pink Jacket!

What is your favourite food & wine pairing?

Sunday’s home-cooked Roast Chicken and Chardonnay, it works every time!

Where is a hidden gem in the region to visit?

I love Curtis Bay along the Dunsborough-Castle Rock Trail. Just a little bit of effort gets you to a tiny, secluded, pristine and peaceful beach. Take a picnic, take a book and breathe!

What’s your top tip for visitors to the region?

If you’re a golfer, bring your clubs. We are incredibly lucky to have a handful of beautifully maintained, challenging and awarded 18-hole courses, all an easy drive within the region.
