This is Antonio Carriera, he kicked off his adventure at Swings & Roundabouts in January 2020, right when they flung open the doors post-renovation! What a wild ride it’s been, growing and grooving alongside this fantastic company!We chatted with Antionio and asked him to share a few things with us.
How did you get in the wine industry?
My first professional internship, which I began in 2008, was with a French glass manufacturer named Saverglass. During my six-month stint there, I conducted a market study focused on the Portuguese wine market, which was an exciting experience. Here in Australia before joining Swings, I completed a Certificate III in Wine Industry Operations at TAFE Margaret River in 2019.
What is your favourite varietal and why?
Malbec is like a cozy blanket of red wine that wraps you in richness and joy, leaving you craving just one more glass! And those Portuguese white wines, Arinto and Albarino? They whisk me away to sun-soaked summer afternoons in Portugal.
What is your favourite food & wine pairing?
In my charming little corner of Nazare, Portugal, nothing beats feasting on freshly grilled seafood while sipping on a crisp glass of Albarino at one of our delightful oceanfront eateries! It’s a deliciously simple affair that’s easy on the wallet and always hits the spot!
Where is a hidden gem in the region to visit?
Forget the crowded Injidup Natural Spa for sunset! If you walk along the Cape-to-Cape track until you hit the bay's middle point, you'll stumble upon a dreamy bench with 360-degree ocean view. Grab a bottle of wine, some cheese, and crackers, and voilà! You’ve just unlocked the best sunset of your life!
What’s your top tip for visitors to the region?
Swing by this region from February to March! No crowds to dodge, no flies buzzing around, and no more breezy afternoons. The vines are looking at their best and the ocean is still calling your name for a refreshing dip. It's paradise waiting.
