Meet the Margaret River Maker: Cath Oates from Oates Ends

“I’ve worked all over the world and this would be one of easiest places to make great wines,” says Cath Oates, of Oates Ends about the Margaret River Wine Region.

Oates Ends is a small family-run winery, with Cath working as winemaker, and her brother, Russ running the vineyard. The winery signifies homecoming and family to Cath.

“The wines are made from a family vineyard that my father planted 25 years ago, and my brother now owns,” Cath says.

“I was born and grew up in Margaret River, but worked all over the world – in New Zealand, the United States of America and Italy. I have only been back for the last eight years. The wines are the culmination of all that experience, plus a lifelong love of my hometown.”

Sustainability is held in high regard by Cath and her family, and a cause they have championed for decades. The winery is a Certified Member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, reinforcing this commitment.

Oates Ends focuses making Margaret River’s famous wine varieties; Chardonnay and Chardonnay, as well a compelling Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend called ‘The GWB’, which is named in memory of an unfortunate encounter Cath had with a white shark before vintage 2021, and the support she received from the Margaret River wine community.

In addition, a Tempranillo Rose, Tempranillo form part of the wine range.

As for Cath’s favourite grape to work with, Chardonnay takes the prize.

“Chardonnay as this is the wine I like drinking the most, plus it’s the most challenging to make as it has a lot of winemaker influence. You really have to know what you’re trying to do, or it will show up your mistakes.”
