We chatted with Jo and asked her to share a few things with us.
How did you get in the wine industry?
I had an office career in Perth for many years, but on moving to Margaret River (for the first time in 2009) I was looking for a change. After completing a wine appreciation course, cellar door work appealed to me. Shortly after my move and during a tasting at Woody Nook, I found they had an opening that included both cellar door and admin work and I was given a go. Basically, I was at the right place at the right time!
What is your favourite food & wine pairing?
Having recently discovered Vermentino, it has taken the place of a Semillon or Semillon Blend with seafood for me. But I also can’t go past Cabernet with beef!
Where is a hidden gem in the region to visit?
The Raptor Centre (formerly Eagles Heritage) is a wonderful and interesting not for profit bird sanctuary only minutes from town. If you love wildlife, birds especially, and/or an overseas visitor it’s a great way to come up close and personal to some of Australia’s most amazing birds of prey. It also has a lovely gift shop and is a great thing to do either before or after a visit to Xanadu as it’s just across the road!
Where in the world of wine would you like to visit?
My next overseas holiday is hopefully going to be Italy where I am looking forward to familiarising myself with their wine varietals, many of which I’ve never experienced. Tuscany is the obvious top pick but I’m aware there are many picturesque regions to sip my way through while admiring the country!
Your thoughts on what makes our region so special.
Our region has incredibly diverse natural wonders - our breath taking coastline, beautiful forests, incredible caves and gorgeous birds and native animals. But there’s also a wonderful community spirit here which makes Margaret River a fantastic place to live also.
