Beachside Rosé Festivities for the 2024 Endeavour Group Margaret River Wine Show Judging and Lauded ‘Pink Jacket’ Presentation

The Margaret River wine community gathered, beachside, on Monday evening for the second year of judging the region’s Best Rosé in this unique format, for the 2024 Endeavour Group Margaret River Wine Show. Judging was followed by a Beach Party celebration to honour last year’s Trophy Winner with the presentation of their custom made ‘Pink Jacket’.

Over 60 members of the local wine community gathered with visiting judges at the Beach Party, held at the White Elephant in Gnarabup, where Winemaker Japo Dalli Cani, maker of the 2023 Margaret River Wine Show Best Rosé, McHenry Hohnen 2023 Chloé, was fitted in his custom-tailored Pink Jacket from the iconic Sydney atelier P. Johnston.

Why a Pink Jacket?

Since 2015, the Pink Jacket has been presented to the Rosé Trophy winner at the Margaret River Wine Show. Inspired by the iconic ‘Masters Green Jacket’ which is presented at the professional golf championship, to the winner in the immediate aftermath of the victory. That jacket is borrowed from an Augusta National Golf Club member with roughly the same build as the winner, and the champion is later measured for their own tailored version.

Margaret River Wine Association’s custom-tailored Pink Jacket is made by iconic Sydney atelier P. Johnson. The partnership was formed through the friendship of previous Margaret River Wine Show Committee Chair, and Deep Woods Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy and P. Johnson Founders, Patrick Johnson and Tom Riley, who all studied Oenology together at the University of Adelaide.

Judging Rosé

Judging for the 2024 Endeavour Group Margaret River Wine Show is underway, with a national panel, led by this year’s Chief of Judges, chief winemaker David Bicknell of Oakridge Wines.

In 2023, Chief of Judges Nick Ryan made the decision to stage the Rosé Judging at a coastal location, to provide visiting judges a lasting impression of the Margaret River Wine Region. It also takes the Rosé judging into its ‘natural habitat’ environment, similar to where it is often consumed. The tradition continued for the 2024 Wine Show, with Rosé judging conducted by the beach, with the sun setting over the Indian Ocean.

The Novonesis Trophy for the Best Rosé of 2024 will be awarded at the Endeavour Group Margaret River Wine Show Awards Lunch on Friday 1 November, at Wills Domain.
